Susan Gonzales, LPC-S, LMFT-SFounder and Clinical Supervisor

Born and raised in Austin, I knew at age 13 that I wanted to be a therapist. I earned a dual licensure in both professional counseling and marriage and family therapy so that I would be qualified to help individuals, couples, and families address a wide range of life issues.

Over the past 10 years in private practice, I have developed my clinical specialties to address the unique challenges of adult males, couples, and moms. My therapeutic approach is authentic, genuine, and open-minded. I use techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy and systems theory to help my clients identify thought processes and communication patterns that help or hinder their relationships. Ultimately I strive to help people build healthy relationships with themselves and others.

As my client, you will be able to set the goals for your therapy, and I am there to provide continual guidance and support along the way. I am passionate about my work and love what I do.

Wanting to change can be frustrating and bring up so much shame. I work with clients to explore what is preventing them from achieving their goals. Therapy is a safe place to work through unresolved feelings, learn how to lean on others, and feel confident in your ability to set limits in relationships.

I believe good therapy works with thoughts, emotions, and the body. If you have read body language, you have seen emotions and thoughts impact a person’s body, from posture and facial expressions to breathing, heart rate, gut feelings, and more. I use talk therapy to help clients communicate with the less logical parts of themselves. This is especially helpful when clients are under stress because big feelings don’t make people more reasonable. If you are doing your best and still feel stuck, come see me.

I see individual adults and couples only. Areas of specialized experience include grief, shame, and trauma, including medical trauma. I also help foster resilience in parents of medically complex children.

“More and more I’ve come to understand that listening is one of the most important things we can do for one another. Whether the other be an adult or a child, our engagement in listening to who that person is can often be our greatest gift. Whether that person is speaking or playing or dancing, building or singing or painting, if we care, we can listen.” ~ Mr. (Fred) Rogers

Are you seeking change in your life? As your therapist, I help facilitate change by promoting a growth mindset. Meaning, I create space to help you get to where you want to be.  And I promise that with my help, you will get there!

I work with individuals, couples and families. More specifically, I work with adult women of all ages working through life and career transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, among other issues.

I value a holistic approach to therapy and understand that personal growth happens just as much inside of session as it does outside, too. Therefore, I encourage my clients to utilize their resources and interests to leverage the work we do to reach optimal potential.  I truly value the relationship that I have with my clients.

My work with couples entails attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology and elements of Gottman (as I have completed Level I training).  I am passionate about helping couples find new ways of communicating and reconnecting.

My work with families entails navigating difficulties related to blended families, adult children and their parents and psychosomatic disorders.  I believe in a systemic and collaborative approach where all voices are heard.

Lastly, I work with individuals and couples 65 or older who might be experiencing changes in life due to jobs, relocation, support systems and family dynamics.  I also provide counseling to those who care for their loved ones who do not live independently.

I have master’s degree in both professional counseling and marriage and family therapy and an undergraduate degree in psychology, and I’ve worked in public education and the nonprofit sector. I also am a trained yoga teacher and have experience as a long distance and recreational runner.

I also offer walk and talk therapy. If you think you’d be a good fit for this, let’s talk!

Ryan SmithLPC - Intern

My name is Ryan Smith. I am so glad that you found me and believe that you have come to the right place. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern (Supervised by Susan Gonzales) and psychotherapist. I have professional experience working with adolescents, adults, couples and families, particularly with those who identify as “perfectionists.” As a former marine and Olympic athlete, I have a strong passion toward working with athletes, too, as I firsthand understand the challenges and complexity that line of work entails.

I would describe myself as an existentialist at heart and believe that everyone deserves respect and empathy. I utilize an eclectic person-centered approach and specialize in trauma, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, solution-focused, and many other therapeutic modalities. However, none of these terms are as important as the relationship we form through the therapeutic process. The foundation of therapy starts with what you want to gain from therapy. We will work together to establish therapeutic goals, and I will help you to attain those goals.

If you have made it thus far, I highly suggest that you give therapy a go! I believe that it will be worth your while.
